Sugar Sugar

Sugar

We have been producing sugar continuously for over 190 years and have produced over 6.5 million tonnes since the Velvet Revolution. We deliver up to 370,000 tonnes of sugar to our customers annually in the form of crystal, powder or cubes.

  • 1

    To customers

Customers take our sugar home from supermarkets in traditional kilo packages. They bake, cook or sweeten their coffee with it, either by the spoonful or in cubes. Even those in the shape of card symbols that we call bridge.

  • 2

    For bulk consumers

We also deliver sugar in larger (25 kg, 50 kg) or really large (1 tonne, so-called big bag) bags to small confectioneries, bakeries or dairies.

  • 3

    For bulk processors

And then we take it by tankers or trains to really big processors like soda, candy or dairy manufacturers. We have customers in the Czech Republic and across Europe.

Ethanol

Ethanol
  • Potable alcohol

Potable alcohol intended for the production of alcoholic beverages, which we supply both to the largest domestic alcohol producers and to liquor companies abroad. It is produced in our distilleries in Kolín, Chrudim and Kojetín.

  • Technical and fine alcohol

Alcohol intended for non-food use. It is used, for example, in the production of cosmetics, car cosmetics or mixtures for windshield washers. We produce it in Chrudim, Kolín and Kojetín distilleries.

  • Bioethanol

Anhydrous alcohol (bioethanol) intended for blending into gasoline or for the production of a high-percentage mixture of E85 (15% gasoline and 85% bioethanol). The use of this alcohol in transport brings a certified saving of CO2 emissions of 80% compared to fossil fuel. Thanks to these values, the Tereos TTD company contributes to the fulfillment of the Czech Republic's long-term obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the EU. In addition, it is energy produced in the Czech Republic from local raw materials, which contributes to reducing dependence on energy imports.

  • Anhydrous alcohol

Alcohol with high alcohol content and purity, used as a raw material for production in the pharmaceutical or cosmetic industry. We produce it in the Kojetín and Kolín distilleries.

Feed

Feed
  • Pellets

Pellets are included in feed recipes for both domestic and farm animals. They are created by drying and pressing pulps. Beet sugar pellets serve as an energy-carbohydrate feed with a high fiber content for a wide range of animals. We produce them in our sugar factories in Dobrovice and České Meziríčí, and more than half of our production goes abroad, mainly to Scandinavia.

  • Stillages

Distillery stills, a by-product of the production of raw alcohol from sugar beet in our Dobrovice and Kojetín distilleries, are used as part of the fodder base for farm animals.

Fertilizers

Fertilizer
  • Lime saturation sludge

Lime saturation sludge is supplied to farmers as a high-quality natural fertilizer, especially rich in calcium and other minerals. They are created as a by-product of sugar production in the sugar factories of Dobrovice and Česká Meziříčí.

  • Vinasse

Distillery vinasse is also used as a high-quality liquid sulfur-potassium fertilizer that farmers apply to their fields. Our basic raw material – sugar beet – is returned to the field in a different form in the spirit of circular economy principles.

Byproducts

During the process, we also create by-products. The main ones include water, biogas and soil. We return water to nature and save 5% of fossil energy annually.

Few people know that sugar factories get all the water they need for their production from beets. Sugar beet contains 75% water, which can be used by the sugar factory. The remaining water is then thoroughly cleaned at a biological wastewater treatment plant and returned to nature.

During the biological purification of water, biogas (biomethane) is also produced, which is used as fuel in the boiler room of the sugar factory and thus reduces the consumption of fossil natural gas. Thanks to this, for example, the Dobrovice sugar factory saves up to 5% of fossil energy in its energy mix annually, and thus also emissions.

The beet is brought to the sugar factory directly from the field, and despite thorough threshing directly in the field so that valuable soil is not taken away from the fields unnecessarily, it contains soil residues. Therefore, it must be thoroughly washed before processing to keep it clean. The water that washes the beets flows through the ponds where the soil from the beets settles. At the end of the campaign, the fertile soil is extracted from the ponds, dried naturally and taken back to the field where it belongs. The sugar factory is thus indirectly a major anti-erosion factor.
